The former EPD team focusing on innovation in rural settings, developed the LIAT toolset aimed at helping local actors take stock of local innovation activities, engage in deeper conversation on how to promote local innovation, and to identify and implement innovative initiatives that have potential to yield far reaching and lasting development impact. The broad applicability of the tools to areas that are not rural and their role in advancing (beyond assessing) innovation in specific localities triggered the need for the change of name from RIAT to LIAT.
Since then, LIAT has been continuously evolving to fit various local contexts and policy development needs.
